Expansion joints are responsible for a significant proportion of the costs in the maintenance of bridges.Their acquisition costs are not more than 1% of the total cost of a bridge (Braun 2011),it shows the importance of these structures in bridge maintenance.Recent studies in England and France demonstrate that expansion joints are the cause of a large number of bridge damage. In particular, studies by Lima Marques (2006)and Marques Lima & de Brito (2006) revealed, that more than 20% of the maintenance cost are caused by repair and renewal of expansion joints. There are also costs related to expansion joint associated damages are hard to assess.Examples include indirect costs related to renewal measures or the closing of roads.
