Chinese culture moves across the world, and,in many places, especially in East Asia,it has been doing so for a very long time. This paper will view some mechanisms of the transmission of Chinese culture from the point of view of the receiving cultures."Transmission" of culture is not an abstract process, nor is it a simple one;it is a multi-layered set of phenomena, involving material objects(such as art, music, and food),movement of people,as well as knowledge and ideas, which has more to do with selective appropriation by the so-called "recipient" than it does with any attributes,or actions,on the part of the originating culture.Conceptual accounts of cultural transmission have used the concept of "transculturation" to explain the controlling role of the receiver over the process of transmission to suit their own purposes. The concept arose in colonial studies,in the context of a dominant colonizing power and a subjugated colonized one,but is useful also in explaining the transmission of Chinese culture across the world. This paper considers two quite specific cases of Chinese cultural transmission, relating to the transmission of Confucianism and elite literature. One is the adoption of the temple to Confucius in Taku in in early 18 th-century Japan, where the temple was deployed as a material vector for the introduction of Confucian teachings in response to governmental needs at that particular time and place. The result was an institution inspired by the Chinese model which became so firmly implanted in the local culture that it remains in active use to this day.The second case,a quite different one,is the introduction of Chinese Confucian canons and elite literature through the activities of two well-known translators into English,James Legge and Arthur Waley. Here too a similar pattern of the cultural receivers appropriated Chinese cultural forms for the demands of a specific time and place, such that their translations established themselves within the intellectual and literary circles of the time.Their translations took on a form that was understandable, useful, and appealing to a Western audience.of Chinese culture in other countries will continue.Cultural transmission from China to the world is bound to increase, with the continuing numbers of Chinese people going abr oad,and people elsewhere in the world going to China.China’s rising profile in the world ensures a high demand for the understanding, and c onsumpti on,of Chinese culture in other countries will continue.
