Concrete is a composite material made of aggregates and the reaction product of the cement and the mixing water,i.e.the porous cement paste.Also,concrete is normally reinforced with steel bars which provide the tensile capacities.On ordinary reinforcing steel embedded in alkaline concrete a thin protective oxide film(the passive film)is formed spontaneously.The protective action of the passive film is immune to mechanical damage of the steel surface.
