Gastric cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide.It occurs commonly in the pyloric antrum which is normally lined by two main mucous cell types: pit and gland mucous cells.These cells originate from epithelial progenitor cells which are responsible for the renewal of the whole epithelium.It is not known whether these stem/progenitor cells are involved in the development of gastric cancer.The aim of this study was to follow the changes that occur in epithelial stem/progenitor cells during the early stages of gastric carcinogenesis in trefoil factor 1-knockout mice which with age develop spontaneous adenomas and carcinomas in the pyloric antrum.Two lectins, UEA-1 and GSII, were used as markers for pit and gland mucous cells, respectively.
