The combustion characteristics of three equal-sized diesel droplets in parallel burning in air flows are investigated experimentally at two selected droplet separations (d=13 mm and 7 mm) respectively. After igniting three interactive droplets at Re=87, the Reynolds number is controlled stepwise from 87 to 175 to investigate flame configurations and droplet burning rates. For the case of larger droplet separation at d=13mm, two combustion modes including three envelope flames enclosing each droplet at Re≤1311 and three wake flames locating behind each droplet at Re≥135 are obtained. For the case of smaller droplet separation at d=7 mm, the flame configurations of three interactive droplets are transformed from three individual flames into one collective flame. The combustion modes are found to be one envelope flame enclosing three droplets at Re≤135, one group flame locating behind the central droplet but enclosing the other two droplets at Re=138, and one group wake flame locating behind three droplets at Re≥143. The burning rates of three interactive droplets are deeply affected by their flame configurations. The effects of collective interaction on burning rate are more pronounced at the central droplet than the other two droplets.
