Objective: To determine the optimum extraction method and highest yielding source of free radical scavenging components of Dracocephalum moldavica L.,a medicinal herb of Mongolian China (Inner Mongolia). Methods: Water and ethanol extracts of wild and cultivated samples of D.moldavica were analyzed for free radical scavenging activity using standard hydroxyl free radical and superoxide anion assay kits. Results: Water extracts of both wild and cultivated D.moldavica were found to have greater free radical scavenging activity than ethanol extracts.Wild sample extracts had slightly stronger free radical activity than cultivated samples. Conclusions: Water extraction is preferable to ethanol extraction of free radical scavenging components of D.moldavica.Cultivated D.moldavica is a satisfactory source of plant material for such use.
