In conventional GC × GC, separation time in the 2nd dimension column is defined by the duration of the modulation period, which, in turn, is determined by the widths of peaks eluting from the 1st dimension column.Short modulation periods lead to better preservation of the 1st dimension separation at a cost of lower peak capacity in the 2nd dimension.Longer modulation periods improve the available 2nd dimension peak capacity, but sacrifice the 1st dimension resolution.Consequently, the potential separation power of the two-dimensional system is often underutilized.One potential solution to this problem is the technique of stop-flow GC × GC.In this technique, 1st dimension flow is periodically stopped to permit more separation time in the 2nd dimension, thereby improving the overall resolution and/or preventing peak wraparound.
