Phosphorus stress of marine phytoplankton was determined by using both bulk and single-cell alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) assay in typical waters of China Seas (Taiwan Strait,northern South China Sea,East China),time-series variations in APA were monitored on a daily basis during algal bloom.Results showed that phytoplankton was under phosphorus (P) stresses with different degrees and varied with seasons,P stress also depended on the phytoplankton species.In Taiwan Strait,high soluble APA contribution indicated that phytoplankton suffered a long time P stress.Percentages of ELF labeled representative phytoplankton increased with bulk APA during the time-series investigation and matched well with phosphate concentration.
