The failure of proper apoptotic cell clearance by phagocytes has been linked to autoimmune diseases, nonresolving inflammation and developmental abnormalities.The phagocytic removal of apoptotic cells is dynamic, allowing phagocytes to adapt to the changing microenvironment.However, the pathways that prepare phagocytes for efficient apoptotic cell clearance before engulfment are not well defined.Dying cells release find-me signals to recruit phagocytes to initiate their clearance.
