The study of shellfish population dynamics begins with spawning, then hatching, followed by settlement, and recruitment to fishery.In the noble scallop Chlamys senatoria nobilis, its population dynamics was investigated by examining gonado-somatic index (GSI), shell microstructure of spat, juvenile natural mortality and vital parameters of exploited population in Asid Gulf, Philippines.Scallops are the most valuable resource in the gulf composing a commercial fishery that yields 1-3 mt of adductor muscle a day from January to October when weather is calm and conducive for diving to collect scallops.Female C.senatoria nobilis GSI was highest (8%) in February, indicating spawning in this month.Spat settlement was estimated at 12-16 days old.Settlement peaks were recorded in summer months of March to May.Hatch dates back-calculated from shell microgrowth fell between the previous last quarter moon and full moon.Catch curve analysis yielded juvenile natural mortality of 97% per year.Upon recruitment, growth was modeled to be Lt =10.18 cm (1-e-0.51(t-t0)).Total mortality through the differential decay model was Nt =N.e-1.87(t-t0).Recruitment pattern showed major peak in summer months.Yield-per-recruit analysis revealed that optima can be achieved, and on this basis, the resource can be rationally managed for sustained yield.There is evident temporal coherence among the aspects of the life phase investigated despite the independent methods used.The life-history traits and temporal link between early-life phase and recruitment of the species are crucial to understanding its dynamics and guiding the current management scheme.
