The ability of adipose tissue to dispose of circulating fatty acids (FAs) by oxidation or storage as triglyceride (TAG) has important metabolic and clinical implications, by preventing the accumulation of potentially harmful FA metabolites in other organs,such as the liver and muscle.Peroxisomal FA alpha oxidation pathway is involved in adipogenesis and adipocyte FA metabolism.Mammalian fatty acid 2-hydroxylase (FA2H) was recently identified and suggested to catalyze the initial step of the poorly understood straight chain fatty acid alpha oxidation pathway.
