Pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanINs) are the most common precursors of invasive pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).Each stage in the disease progression from PanINs to PDAC is well characterized by multiple and significant genetic alterations affecting signaling pathways.Lack of early detection and effective intervention is major challenge to the poor prognosis and dismal survival rates of pancreatic cancer patients.Understanding of the biological behavior and molecular alterations in the progression from PanINs to PDAC is crucial to the development of non-invasive biomarkers for early detection and diagnosis and to the development of preventive and therapeutic intervention strategies for control of pancreatic cancer progression.This review focuses on molecular biomarkers of PanINs and their important roles in early detection and intervention of pancreatic cancer.
