A primary limitation of composite laminates is the poor interlaminar strength and toughness that lead to interlaminar failure by delamination.Interlaminar stresses due to mismatch of hygro-thermo-mechanical properties are singular or dominant at the free edges, joints, matrix cracks, and under out-of-plane loading.Analysis of edge stresses and delamination models exhibited concentration of interlaminar shear and transverse stresses near the edges and cracks.Such high stresses combined with weak interlaminar properties of the currently used composite laminates cause delamination.
