In materials science, nanoparticles have been invoked as the building blocks for constructing new materials from the bottom up. When nanoparticles are combined with nucleic acids, they can be used as programmable atom equivalents (PAEs) to programme the formation of three-dimensional (3D) colloidal superlattices where the particles‘ size, shape, composition and position can be independently controlled. Recently, we have developed a general method for functionalizing a wide variety of nanoparticles with a dense monolayer of DNA regardless of nanoparticle composition. This method provides a route to a virtually endless class of programmable atom equivalents for DNA-based colloidal crystallization.
