Can the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula be resolved peacefully?By analyzing the DPRKs pursuit of nuclear and missile technologies throughout history,one can see an acceleration of the program with each successive leader.This presents many dangers for the neighboring states.Realism suggests that the principal reason for the DPRK to possess such a program is due to survival and would also suggest that the program cannot be stopped.However,history provides examples of how this issue has been approached,with some forums such as the Agreed Framework and Six Party Talks providing meaningful progress towards denuclearization.Realism provides a basic level of a resolution but does little to suggest how to move forward and maintain the peace,therefore social constructivism is better equipped to deal with this task and suggests that the DPRK must make waves to change its identity to the outside world.The recent revelation of a US-DPRK summit to be held in2018suggests that the DPRK is currently willing to change the narrative and reach a peaceful resolution.However,history and realism would suggest that this action is not sincere considering North Korea has made similar moves in the past.Cautious optimism is prescribed during the currently on-going discussions regarding the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
