In the present thesis, two themes of Heart of Darkness imperialism andhumanity are discussed to show that the novel is more than an exposure ofcruelties and follies of European imperialism and colonialism in AfricanCongo and that Conrad makes it a vehicle by which his concerns abouthumanity are profoundly reflected. The discussion of the novel edopts a socio-historical perspective. Thethesis consists of two parts. In the part of Conrads critique of imperialism, tworelevant aspects are singled out to be emphasized---- the prophecy of generaldecline of imperialism and the devaluation of imperialist ideology. In the partof the implications of humanity in the novel, Conrads views on humanity areconveyed in his refuting the ideology of the "myth of progress". Conrads lifeexperiences to a high degree underlie his views on humanity in Heart ofDarkness.By reviewing Conrads views on imperialism and humanity in the novel, the thesis stresses on the greatness of Conrad as a critical writer and theliterary values of Heart of Darkness as a frontier work.
