The thesis investigates the impact of the belt and road initiative in respect to infrastructural projects in Kenya.Kenya has endlessly played a major role in the region due to its strategic location on the East African coast and has been an active participant of the BRI through the maritime silk road. With the BRI being a massive project, which mainly looks towards the improvement of infrastructure and more connectivity,it brings growth opportunities for other countries.
The research finds that even with criticisms,Kenya is gaining more from the BRI.Alongside with improved road and rail infrastructure, the Kenyan government ambitions has been to transform the country to a middle-income country by2030.Beside the infrastructural developments, there has been influx of Foreign Direct Investment from China to Kenya, which can be attributed to BRI fostered relationships between Kenya and China. The study also finds that China is the leading bilateral trader in Kenya.
Despite many critics against the Standard Gauge Railway(SGR)construction project, this thesis uncovers that benefits realized from SGR construction outweigh the negatives giving evidence to the importance of BRI in Kenya. In particular, this thesis unearths that SGR has had positive impact in job creation through manufacturing, construction and transport sectors of the country and has also positively influenced the economic growth of the country. This thesis also discusses the challenges and shortcomings of the BRI in Kenya and provides recommendations towards proper functioning bilateral relationships between Kenya and China.
