Since the introduction of container in1950s, containerized shipping has changed dramatically, those changes has had a significant impact on ports, thus causing port authorities to deepen the channels, enlarge the scales of wharves and handling equipments, make their services more efficient.In recent years, due to the economic development of hinterland, improved set of transport conditions and constantly opened up new routes, Dalian container terminal (DCT) achieved rapid development, and container throughput successive climb. However, with the accelerated pace of large-scale container ship the front port of call deep water berths, loading and unloading conditions, and operating efficiency, have a higher requirements. Also, liner shipping companies in order to reduce costs and reduce the number of ports of call, thus exacerbating the intense competition between major ports. As an old port, due to its own conditions, the Dalian Container Terminal (DCT) faces tremendous development pressure. However, for the port, the port berth throughput capacity is an important symbol of overall competitiveness. Therefore, the increase berth capacity to attract routes anchored is an important issue of the development of Dalian Container Terminal (DCT).Port berth capacity is a comprehensive index, which consists of terminal handling capacity, storage capacity of repository field, collecting and distributing capacity after in overall balance. However, as the terminal is the largest part of investment. Therefore, the approved parking capacity, terminal capacity should be subject to balance. Capacity of other links should guarantee berth capacity be of full play.In this paper, taking the actual operation of Dalian Container Terminal as an example, such factors as the berth operation days, berth availability, ship handling efficiency, single-ship handling amounts, loading and unloading operation time, ship handing assistant, time of ship berthing and departing, number of container cranes etc. are determined as the influential factors for the berth throughput capacity. All the factors are analyzed and simulated by the computer program. Then the weight of every factor on the berth throughput capacity is obtained, which provides a scientific basis of decision-making for the berth management.In the last, proposed solutions to the main factors of affecting the berth throughput capacity of the Dalian Container Terminal operations.
