艺术离不开情感,“以情动人”是戏剧艺术的重要特质。任何正确而新颖的思想,如果不通过强烈而真挚的情感,是不可能打动和说服观众的。在目前戏剧创作一般不乏正确思想的情况下,京剧《泰山铁罗汉》正是以浓烈酣畅、悲壮豪放的情感而引起人们的瞩目。它以“情”见长,靠“情”取胜,以“思想与感情和谐的统一”(高尔基语)而受到广泛的称赞。首先,在主题和题材的提炼上,它没有因袭武林故事中常见的那种行侠仗义、扶危济困等的陈规俗套;也摒弃了惊险打斗、绝处逢生等离奇场景的廉价追求。而是立足时代精神的高度,从塑造人物出发,着眼于人物内心情感世界的开掘和表达,
