秀丽隐杆线虫以其背景资料丰富、便于操作和观察、廉价等特点,成为用来尝试研究病原细菌的新模型。目前已经将秀丽隐杆线虫作为模式生物,应用于铜绿假单胞菌、粪肠球菌、金黄色葡萄球菌、痢疾杆菌、绿脓杆菌、耶尔森菌、李斯特菌、沙门菌、类鼻疽假单胞菌、化脓性链球菌、鼠伤寒沙门菌、苏云金芽孢杆菌、粘质沙雷菌、隐球菌、细小棒状杆菌等多种病原菌,来研究病原菌的毒力因子、致病机制、与宿主相互作用、生物膜形成、耐药等各个方面。秀丽隐杆线虫以细菌为食,使其以病原菌为食后生存曲线的变化作为判断病原菌致病性的具体方法。
