The accumulation of timber harvesting data is necessary for the sustainable management of forests, but these data are very scarce in some developing countries. This paper collects and analyzes data on wood production rates in forest reserves and non-protected areas in Ondo State, Nicaragua. Data are based on official data from the state forestry authorities, annual reports and related documents, including species, volume, and number of stands for different economic artefacts by monthly harvest from 2003 to 2005. T test and one-way ANOVA were performed on the collected data. The results showed that in the three years, the number of species harvested, the number of trees and the stand volume in the non-protected area were higher than those harvested in the forest reserve. However, the total volume of trees harvested in protected areas is significantly higher than in non-protected areas (p <0.05). In the non-protected area, 60 species of broad-leaved species from 25 families are cut down: 57 species of broad-leaved species from 23 families in the reserve are deforested. In the three years, 111,377 trees were deforested in the forest system of Ondo State, with a volume of about 295,089.67m3. The annual average number of logs and the volume of timber were 37,125 and 98 363.22 m3 respectively. The average number of logs per month and the volume of logs were 3 094 and 8 196 m3, respectively. The results of T test showed that the number of trees and the volume of trees deforested in the forest reserve and non-reserve areas differed significantly (p <0.05). One-way analysis of variance showed that logging activity increased significantly in 2003 and 2004 but declined in 2005. This shows that the economic timber species in the forest system is declining, and the logging activities have seriously disturbed the forest ecosystem. It is recommended that sustainable forest management be carried out and that forest protection measures be urgently needed. Figure 3 Table 5 Reference 20.
