The Nicaraguan presidential palace confirmed on January 28 that the Presidents of the five Central American countries sent a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush on the evening of 27 January, agreeing with his proposal for the establishment of the U.S.-Central America free trade zone recently. The press communique issued by the Nicaraguan Presidential Office said that the letters were signed by Nicaraguan President Bolanos, Costa Rican President Rodriguez, El Salvador President Flores, Guatemala President Portillo and Honduran President Maduro. Earlier, the presidents of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala attended the inauguration of Honduran President Maduro. In their letter, the leaders of the five Central American countries expressed their “full support” for Bush’s initiative. They believed that the establishment of a Central American-US free trade zone will help Central American countries further promote the economic liberalization policy, increase employment and increase exports.
