高柳地区古近系地层经历了从盆地初始裂陷、强烈裂陷到裂陷衰退一系列过程,形成了同沉积断裂坡折带—同沉积构造弯折带—无坡折的缓坡地貌型层序的地层演化系列,因而该地区古近系存在同沉积构造断裂坡折带、同沉积构造弯折带和无坡折的缓坡地貌3种坡折带类型,它们控制了扇三角洲、水下扇、浊积扇和下切水道充填砂体的分布.同沉积断裂坡折带和同沉积构造弯折带之下的低位域砂体是该区隐蔽油气藏勘探的主要目标.
