The three physicists won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their contributions to life sciences. What significant contribution have they made? Ernst Abe set a limit on the resolution of conventional optical microscopes - the half-wavelength limit. Bezig, Hull, and Mona push the known technique to the limit. The earliest detection of a single fluorescent molecule in a condensed state system utilizes the switching effect of fluorescent molecules, combined with stimulated radiation principles and data analysis in physics textbooks Commonly used in the fitting method of positioning, bypassing the seemingly impossible to break through the limit. They brought optical microscopy to the nanoscale, triggering yet another revolution in living biology at room temperature. Their pursuit of science is extremely beautiful. There will be such a paradigm in the future, especially in the interdisciplinary field of physics and life sciences.
