Atherosclerosis (AS) is the basis of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CAD). There are many reasons to participate in the formation of AS. Recent studies have shown that the trimethylamine oxide (TMAO), a choline metabolite that depends on the intestinal flora, is also associated with the occurrence and development of AS. Natural medicines are more pleiotropic. Studies have shown that the polyphenolic compounds can reduce the risk of AS by affecting the diversity of intestinal flora. This article reviews the progress of research on the relationship between natural medicine and intestinal microflora and AS.
