中国十大名花之一的菊花,除了药用、食用、茶用外,很早就作观赏栽培。菊花极易变异,园艺家们选育出了数以千计不同花色、花型的园艺品种,摸索出了包括独本菊、悬崖菊、塔菊、盆景菊等多种造型方式的菊花栽培技艺——“菊艺”。历代以来,以菊为题材的诗画创作层出不穷,形成了独特的“菊文化”,在人民群众中广为流传。中国人自古就有爱菊、养菊、赏菊的传统,而且因为“此花开后更无花”,秋后赏菊更成为人们的传统习俗。
