The TRS-80 expansion interface greatly enhances the functionality and purpose of the TRS-80 Class II computer. With it, you can connect multiple external devices (“peripherals”) to your computer - printers, mass storage devices, communications devices, sound analyzers, speech recognition devices, regular I / O devices, and more. Equally important, expanding the interface allows you to add random access memory. This allows the system to handle longer programs and more data. Once you have filled the RAM (16K) in the TRS-80, you can add 16K or 32K to the expansion interface for a total memory capacity of 32K or 48K (1K = 1024 memory locations or bytes). Expansion units without RAM have a catalog number of 26-1140, 16-1 RAM for 26-1141, and 32K RAM for 26-1142. The connectors provide the following connections: • Two DIN sockets for the recorder so that you can read data from one recorder and write to another. · Line printer connector for receipt on a Radio shack printer or other suitable parallel interface printer. Small disk connector to receive up to four Radio Shack mini-disk drives. • Expansion board connector for adding the RS-232cC connector (or other conventionally designed PCB) to the included connector socket. • Bus PCB connector that attaches the TRS-80 PCB connector The various signals lead to. In addition to these connections, the expansion interface also provides a beat signal that interrupts the computer every 25 milliseconds, which can be used to “beat” the real-time program. Note: Do not connect the expansion interface to Class I TRS-80, both of which are incompatible.
