Since the late 1990s, two distinct trends have emerged in the international community: one is centripetal and one is centrifugal. The former legitimized values globally and thus promoted the process of globalization; the latter led to the emergence of a number of regional phenomena in several different forms: deadly ethnic conflicts, renewed religious fundamentalism, and more Regionalism is intertwined with each other. Although these two trends produce different bases, they interact and reinforce each other. The theme of this article is globalization. The first part summarizes the basic characteristics of globalization; the second part discusses the historical origins of globalization; the third part analyzes the current situation of the U.S. hegemony; and the last part is the impact of globalization on the prospects of Asian countries.
