读五千言的《道德经》,有许多的地方都无法把握老子其本人的原意。特别是《道德经》第八十章:“小国寡民。使有什伯之器而不用,使人重死而不远徙。虽有舟舆,无所乘之;虽有甲兵,无所陈之。使民复结绳而用之。甘其食,美其服,安其居,乐其俗,邻国相望,鸡犬之声相闻,民至老死不相往来。”对于这一章的解读,许多学者大家们都普遍地认为老子针对当时的现实状况,是主张从奴隶社会倒退原始社会,要人们退回到愚昧未开的蛮荒之世,尤其对人类物质文明的否定,是非常消极的。但是联系老子的这整一部书的内容看,对第八十章的内容的认识可以换一个新的角度,小国寡民思想是积极入世的,符合人性发展的。
