AMD is a global supplier of ICs to the personal and networked computer and communications markets. In 1996, AMD experienced an arduous era in a world where the semiconductor industry’s revenue declined by 8.6%. The revenue decreased from 2.468 billion U.S. dollars in 1995 to 1.953 billion U.S. dollars in 1996, a drop of 57%. However, starting from the fourth quarter of 1996, AMD has begun to turn a corner and turn a profit. In the first quarter ended on March 3, 1997, revenue was $550 million and net income was $12.95 million. After the news came out, AMD’s stock price rose 8.5% on the New York Stock Exchange to reach $43 per share. It can be predicted that in the remaining three quarters of 1997, AMD’s revenue will increase substantially, and it is expected to reach US$2.8 billion in the whole year.
