兴化市位于江淮之间的里下河腹部,总面积2393km~2,占里下河地区的五分之一,属水网圩区,平均地面高程+2.4m(废黄河口基面),是著名的“锅底洼”。全市耕地面积192万亩,人口151万。“七五”期间,农业总产值居全国各县之首,粮食、棉花总产量分别列全国第六位和第八位.1980～1989年向国家提供商品粮500万吨即50亿公斤、皮棉28万吨,是江苏省重要的商品粮和优质棉生产基地。
