该文重点对武帝时代于上林苑内开凿昆明池、建章宫太液池等视觉景观及出土瓦当材料进行了研讨,并初步认为这些举措可能与武帝借“缩微化景观”的处理展现“天下一家”式政治与文化欲望息息相关。从“同情的理解”这一历史学研究视角看,汉代人对所谓“天下”的认知和今人比起来并不明晰。在武帝的眼中,“天下”既包括汉朝实际能够控驭的领土,同时也应包括仙界、域外等多重性的空间。他既然不能在现实中对“天下”进行完全掌控,那么通过“缩微化”视觉表现的手法来对此观念进行形式塑造,似乎也可以作为他展现此种政治与文化欲望与情怀的途径。
