Radiotherapy of head and neck tumors have serious and debilitating side effects such as mucositis, osteonecrosis, extensive tooth loss, and persistent “dry mouth” weeks and months after irradiation. These complications are either direct consequences of accidental radiation exposure of the salivary glands or worse. In the past, the morphological and physiological changes in the parotid gland of rats irradiated with X-rays were reported. The numbers of glandular weight and amylase content in the first week after the irradiation were decreased and recovered later.
