在近代中西文化交流方面,福州的贡献是独特的。林则徐提出“师夷长技以制夷”的口号;福建巡抚徐继畲作《环瀛志略》一书,全面介绍世界各国;马尾船政学堂的建立,是中国最早引进西方科技体系的尝试,为近代中国科学技术的发展奠定了基础;在船政学者中,严复翻译《天演论》、《法意》等西方社会政治学名著,使中国人认识到“物竞天择,适者生存”的残酷现实,从而推动了清末的维新运动;而林纾与船政学堂人士合作,翻译了大量的西洋名著,给中国文人展示了西方文学世界;他们的贡献为铸就新一代中国人奠定了文化基础。此外,在法国生活的陈季同,用法文介绍中国的传统文化,在沟通中西文化交流方面做出了卓越的贡献。
