The Royal Concert Hall was remodeled in 1953. In order to improve the sound quality of the hall, a new method of lengthening the reverberation time with electronic technology was studied. It is called “Auxiliary Resonance” and consists of many microphone-amplifier-speaker paths. Microphone and loudspeaker for each path are placed at a point, and the amplitude and phase of the amplifier are adjusted to a reverberation time that lengthens it by one frequency. An experimental system of 89 channels in the 70-340 Hz frequency range has been successfully used to increase the low-frequency reverberation time at the Royal Concert Hall.
