在环境恶劣、条件艰苦的抗日民主根据地,共产党十分重视美术宣传,经常因陋就简地举办形式多样的美术展览,如室内画展、街头画展、流动画展等。这些美术展览的内容绝大多数是揭露日本帝国主义的侵略罪行、歌颂中国人民伟大的抗战精神,也有针对革命队伍中的不良社会现象进行批评的。为了加强美术展览的宣传效果,有些美术作品有时还与其他艺术形式相配合。与国统区不同,抗日民主根据地美术展览很少有单一画种的展览会,更多的是漫画、木刻、石版画、连环画、年画,还有素描、速写、油画等绘画种类一起混合展出的综合性画展,显得稚拙而不够完善。但这些美术展览既丰富了战时的文化生活,又鼓舞了根据地军民的革命斗志和增强了争取抗战胜利的信心,使美术成为抗日救国的有力武器。
