对于“代面”和“大面”的称呼,自唐以来甚为模糊。即使在当下,一些戏曲词典和戏曲学术著作,仍然将“代面”和“大面”混为一谈。实际上,“代面”与“大面”并不完全相同。“代面”是南北朝、隋朝时期出现的带着木刻面具进行的独角戏乐舞表演。而“大面”则是在唐代形成的演员通过面部化妆、融歌舞与故事情节演绎于一体的角抵歌舞戏表演。当下戏曲界将古典戏曲名词“敷演”含义笼统解释为“搬演、表演”也是不恰当、不准确的。而将“敷演”解释为“南戏与明清传奇剧本术语,意为化妆表演、演义”则更为妥当。
