Last month the Burlington North Railway in the United States put a 3,000-horsepower (2238kW) SD40-2 diesel-powered locomotive on liquid methane frozen in commercial operation. The other three locomotives are also being retrofitted to prepare for a 12-month trial of towing coal-bound trains in Wyoming and Montana. The Burlington Northern Railways trial of gas-fired diesel locomotives started in 1982 after oil prices rose. The experimental locomotive used at the time was a modified GP9 locomotive with a trailer mounted on the back of a road that sat on a flat car. Despite the lack of power, the tentatively constructed test device proved the feasibility of using gas fuels for diesel locomotives. With the call for reducing emissions of diesel engines getting higher and higher, to further improve the performance of the open
