小鼠ig 10g/kg/d山栀(乙醇提取物)×4d,其环己巴比妥睡眠时间显著延长,肝脏呈灰绿色。与之相比,同剂量其它护肝中药,如茵陈和垂盆草等均无上述作用。以大鼠验证表明,ig 4g/kg/d山栀(乙醇提取物)或250 mg/kg/d去羟栀子甙连续4d,其肝微粒体p-450含量和对硝基笨甲醚脱甲基酶活性,分别降至对照组值的30%和35%,或67%和72%。给药组大鼠肝脏均呈灰绿色。上述结果提示,大剂量山栀或其“有效”成份去羟栀子甙,或许会诱发以p-450丢失为特征的肝脏毒性。

The liver of the rats in treatment group showed gray-green color. The above results suggest that large doses of gardenia or its “potent” component, desmethoxy glycosides, may induce liver toxicity characterized by loss of p-450.
