According to a recent report by the Foreign Affairs Bureau, the latest data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute show that the global steel consumption in 1996 is expected to increase by only 1.3% over 1995 to reach 565.7 million tons. The only industrialized country that did not increase its steel consumption in 1995 was Japan. Steel consumption in other industrialized countries such as the United States and Canada grew for the fifth straight year in a row; in the UK for the third consecutive year of growth; and in Continental Europe for the first year of recovery.
