Testing of 40% Tin Crosshead Bearings Development of Aluminum 40% Tin is designed to give the best conformability and anti-stick bite, with an alloy that is more load-bearing than white metal to avoid fatigue when used as a crosshead bearing. The test machine test (Figure 30) showed that its anti-stick properties were only slightly lower than that of white metal. Hardness values suggest that its compliance at engine operating temperatures is only slightly lower than for white alloys. For these reasons, it can be expected that its bearing characteristics are suitable for use in cross-head bearings without any additional difficulties and without surface coating.
