Corporate-funded academic research is generally considered less accessible and less useful to others, and the data presented by Brian D. White and colleagues pose a challenge to this view. The government has long encouraged university-business collaboration to inspire innovation that can create jobs, enhance investment and produce products that improve quality of life. At the same time, the shrinking government budget in science has forced the university to seek funding through other channels. According to the statistics of the National Science Foundation, research funding provided by enterprises in 2012 accounted for only 5% of the annual research funding of US research universities (about 3.2 billion U.S. dollars).
