The Kite Runner is the first novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. This novel tells us a story between two boys of Afghanistan. Amire was born in a wealthy family while Hassan was his servant. Both of them had lost their mothers. Amire’s mother lost her life when she gave birth to her son and Hassan’s mother ran away with other man. These two boys was brought up by the same nurse. It seemed that they possessed a kind of solid friendship. However, when Hassan was insulted by others because he wanted to protect Amire′s glory, Amire chose to escape. After almost one year, Amire drove Hassan away from his home by some tricks. Then Hassan moved to America, established a happy family and became a famous writer. One day he answered a phone call from his father’s friend. The old man told him that Hassan had died and he should take Hassan’s son, Sorob, from the war in Afghanistan. This was Amire’s duty, not only because he hurt Hassan but also because Hassan was his half-brother.
What impressed me most was one sentence after I finished this book. It is “For you, a thousand times”. I do not know how much love and loyalty it contained to Amire that Hassan was willing to sacrifice everything for Amire even Amire had hurt him. This sentence might be the reflection of Hassan’s life. At last, Hassan was killed by Taliban in order to protect Amire’s house. For Hassan, he betrayed his friend because of his timidity and he cannot face Hassan’s loyalty. This kind of feeling has suppressed him so much so the peaceful life in America was the best way for him to forget the past. But there is always something in life that we cannot forget no matter how hard we try. God will guide us back to the beginning of our memory. So Amire came back to Afghanistan after twenty years and decided to make it up for Hassan′s son. The value of life was presented totally in the process of fighting against Taliban. Amire regained his courage and develop a new view of life.
“For you, a thousand times.” It sounds like an innocent fun, manipulating so much love and hate in our life. Maybe we will imagine what will happen if Amire tries to protect Hassan. If Amire confessed to Hassan after the accident, is there any possibility that the ending will be different? But that is exactly what life is. Some mistakes require us to devote the whole life to correcting them. For Amire, one mistake in his boyhood changed the friendship between Hassan and him and also the life of they two has been changed.
Everybody has a kite in his life. It can stand for all sorts of feelings and all the good qualities, such as loyalty, integrity, kindness and so on. It can also stand for our dreams or pities we left in our childhood. We run after the kite and we gradually feel the truth of life in a succession of happiness and bitterness. Maybe this is life. It requires us to take on responsibilities and strike our way out of all the difficulties and we will feel every love and hatred, happiness and bitterness. Behind that long string of the kite are our pursuit to our dreams and gratitude toward our lives.
