柑桔的染色体数量和减数分裂的研究,对于进一步了解柑桔类果树的遗传变异,指导育种实践,以及阐明柑桔的种属进化关系等,都具有重要的价值。自从1907年Strasburger开创这项研究以来,不少科学工作者开展了这方面的工作,并取得一定进展。例如P.K.R.Nair和G.S.Randhawa对柑桔粗线期染色体形态的研究,Masao Iwamasa对柑桔染色体畸变与不育性和无籽性状的关系的研究,Raghuvanshi S.S.则综合报道了一些柑桔类型减数分裂的染色体行为,为柑桔属的进化提供细胞学证据等。
