建国前毛主席像章多为铜、铁、锡,而延安时期多为铅、锡、木质等。而在延安时期用金属制作第一枚毛主席像章的是我国著名电影导演凌子风。这枚像章是在党的第七次全国代表大会召开前夕,为主席团成员制作。由鲁迅艺术学院的同志们倡议,并让凌子风担纲雕刻像模。于是凌子风找来一块旧砚台在背面雕刻毛主席头像,作为像模,再用锡制香炉、酒壶 Before the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Chairman Mao was mostly bronze, iron and tin, while Yan’an was mostly lead, tin and wood.
