1997 was the 25th year since the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China in 1972. Looking back over these 25 years of history, we can see that it has made remarkable achievements in expanding its economic activities. The trade volume between the two countries reached 60 times that of the normalization of state diplomacy. From Japan’s point of view, China is the second trading partner after the United States, and from the perspective of China, Japan has become the number one trading partner. Japan’s direct investment in China has reached the level of 4.4 billion U.S. dollars a year, ranking 4th in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province of China and the United States. At the same time, the economic cooperation centering on Japanese yen loans has reached 2 trillion yen. The past 25 years have seen a period of economic exchange between Japan and China expanding and becoming an important partner in economic activities. This understanding we all agree. We can easily foresee that in the 21st century, the economic exchanges between Japan and China will continue to expand and we must continue to expand it.
