2001年2月26日是新疆生产建设兵团农五师83团学校新学期开学的第一天,从小学到高中有3860名学生按时返校报到。当天夜晚,387名住校学生住进了学校宿舍,然而一场意想不到的事情发生了,课堂上老师正讲着课,就有学生突然倒地抽搐不止,有的学生正在校园里玩耍就突然昏倒,一时间学生东倒一个西倒一个,这个场面把老师和同学们惊呆了,救护车、警车在医院和学校之间不停地穿梭。不到一天的时间里,住校生中有一半以上的学生食物中毒。学生家长得知此事后,纷纷赶到学校和医院,看望自己的孩子。事件逐级上报,引起各部门高度重视。兵团党委领导多次打电话询问;国务院办公厅、国家教育部也打来电话了解情
