Rembrandt Bugatti
Rembrandt Bugatti is one of the special kind of sculptors called by the French name “Animalier”, they concentrate entirely on modeling animals.
The greatest of them was Barye a French 19 century sculptor.Rembrandt Bugatti is among the very best of them.
He was born in Milan Italy in 1884 the son of the famous designer Carlo Bugatti, he had an older brother Ettore who designed one of the first racing cars: “the Bugatti”.
Rembrandt Bugatti showed his talent as a sculptor even when he was a small child and already showed a special sympathy for animals.
He lived most of his life in Paris and in Antwerp in Belgium. He worked directly from animals at the zoo and the directors of both the Paris and Antwerp zoos gave him special support, because they were impressed by his special relationship with the animals.
He had a dealer and bronze founder in Paris called Hebrard who promoted Bugatti’s work through exhibitions and publicity, so that even as a young man he was able to support himself from sales of his work in bronze.
Unfortunately though he got on well with animals Bugatti was not at ease with his fellow human beings and he led a very lonely and anxious life.
When World War I broke out sales of his work stopped, the zoos were closed and it became impossible for him to carry on sculpting.
In 1916 during a period of deep depression Bugatti committed suicide, he was still only in his early 32’s.(版面有限英文文摘)
