To accurately measure trace elements in seawater, a fast and sensitive method is needed. Direct graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry can provide the required speed and sensitivity, but interference from highly salty materials creates many analytical challenges. Care must be taken to control several factors to be reliable against single criteria that are not affected by changes in salt and matrix composition. This article will discuss the use of organic matrix modifiers and Zeeman background correction, pyrolytic graphite tubes, peak heights and areas for the determination of cadmium and copper. The research work was carried out on the Hitachi Zeeman 180-80 atomic absorption spectrometer.
