Railway rails require special properties such as abrasion resistance and peel resistance. In addition, due to the recent trend toward long rails, good weldability is also required. Therefore, Nippon Steel Tube Co., Ltd. (NKK) developed a rail welding construction process, such as submerged arc welding, arc welding and flash welding to ensure the excellent performance of rail joints. As an adjunct to the construction process, a flash cleaning device and a surface polishing device have also been developed and put into practical use by NKK. Through these welding processes, NKK is making a significant contribution to the line construction of Japan’s state-owned railways. This article presents ancillary equipment developed by NKk for the performance of rail joints and the use of welded rails for the latest rail grades using various methods of welding.
